Rally Day 9/12 !

Support Our Praise Dancers!
Trinity’s Praise Dance Group will be part of the Zion Jubilee Days Parade on Labor Day, Monday, September 6! We need wrapped candy donations (money donations for the purchase of candy are equally appreciated). We also need plenty of volunteer parade walkers to hand out the candy and Trinity flyers. Please sign up in Larson Hall. Contact Desi Cole (847-846-0187) for more information.

A Town Meeting will be held in September to discuss the results of Trinity’s T.A.G. Assessment. Date & time to be announced in worship bulletins.

Older Adult Group Plans Events
Last year Trinity’s older adults began to meet together under the uncreative name of the “Older Adult Group.” Now we have been transformed into SAGES (Senior Adults Going Everywhere Sharing). Our first meeting this year will be Thursday, September 16 at 1 p.m. in Larson Hall where we will brainstorm activities/ speakers/trips for the next year. All members over 60 are welcome to attend. Bring your ideas & suggestions! See Pastor Rich if you have questions.

September-November Loose Offerings Loose offerings collected each Sunday are given to a special ministry beyond the walls of our church. September-November loose offerings are designated to go to the CROP Hunger Walk. This means that if you have loose offering which you would like to designate to the general ministry of the church, you will need to place that in a pew envelope. Loose checks made out to Trinity will also go towards our general ministry. All other loose offering will go towards the designated outside ministry.

We will try to answer the adult questions raised by the stories. October 9, 2010 will be the next one..

SUPPORT OUR TROOPS!
Knitting for Our Troops in Iraq Gladys Piat is knitting helmet liners for the soldier’s stationed in Iraq. I am hoping to have her pattern posted in Larson Hall by the time you read this article. The materials needed are black, 4-ply, 100% wool only. Paton’s Brand name Merino wool works up very well and is available at Michael’s and Jo-Ann Fabrics. The average cost per skein is $4.99.
I am still in need of squares, knitted or crocheted in any type and any color of yarn. When assembled, these squares will be stitched together and become afghans for donation to the Warm Up America organization. Each square should measure 7” X 9”. The directions were in the November 2007 Newsletter – cast on 35 stitches on size 8 needles and away you go!
I haven’t seen any or heard about any Prayer Shawls coming in. With the onset of cold weather and the holiday hustle and bustle being over, it’s a good time to knit your way to happiness.
Ladies (and gentlemen), are you up for another Knitter’s & Crocheter’s Luncheon? This time we can bring a dish to share and the main course will be provided. If you are interested, contact me. Be sure to bring at least one project that you are working on. If anyone needs a ride to church, please let me know that too. — Happy Valentine’s Day! Liga

Trinity Men's Group
Trinity Men's Group will meet on the second Saturday morning of each month at 9 AM. The men will gather in Larson Hall for fellowship and to perform some of the property tasks. For more information, contact Dwain Turunen

Shingles Vaccine: What is it and why do we need it

About 90% of people over the age of 10 have had chickenpox at sometime during their life. Once infected with the varicella-zoster virus that causes chickenpox, the person gets an itchy rash of bumps and blisters over the body. The person may also have a low-grade fever and a sore throat. The body rash usually clears up within 1-3 weeks, but the virus that caused the chickenpox never leaves the body. It remains inactive in nerves near the spinal cord, and in about 10-20% of people the virus can become active again and cause shingles.

Persons at higher risk for shingles are adults over age 60, and people with weakened immune systems from AIDS, those under treatment with steroids, radiation, chemo therapy, and those with a history of certain cancers.

Like chickenpox, shingles begins with a red rash and blisters on the body, but these blisters are very painful, and after often form in bands that start in the middle of the back and wrap around one side of the body. The neck, face, or scalp and other parts of the body may also be affected. Other symptoms include itching, fever and chills, headache, and upset stomach and abdominal pain.

Generally, shingles heals in about 2-3 weeks, but about 20% of patients develop severe pain caused from nerve damage in and around the same area as the blisters and rash.

Persons who suspect they may have shingles should call their Doctor to ask about pain control if over the counter medications such as anti-itch cream and antihistamines are not effective. Antiviral drugs and cortisone may be prescribed to reduce the length and severity of symptoms.

A person suffering with shingles can pass the virus to others who have not had chickenpox, and should definitely avoid exposure to pregnant women and anyone with a weakened immune system.

A vaccine for shingles is available for people over age 60 and can prevent shingles in adults age 60 and older who have had chickenpox. The vaccine is not a guarantee that the person will not get shingles, but the vaccine will reduce the severity of the disease. Speak to your Doctor to check whether the vaccine is recommended for you.

Medicare Part D insurance covers the vaccine, but Medicare Part B plans do not. Check with your insurance plan to see if you have coverage, as the injection is expensive.

The Lake County Health Department is a provider of the shingles vaccine. Appointments are required and can be made by calling 847-377- 8470. You will be expected to pay for the injection, and will receive a receipt which can be submitted to your insurance company.

CONTRIBUTION STATEMENTS
In the past, the financial secretary has sent out contribution statements on a quarterly basis. This year, that practice will be adjusted to reflect the recommendations of the Synod Stewardship Renewal Program. We will continue to send out statements four times a year. The revised schedule will include the following mailing dates:
• 1st week in May: for contributions posted through April 30
• 1st week in September: for contributions posted through August 31
• 1st week in December: for contributions posted through November 30
• 3rd week in January: for contributions posted through December 31
Any questions about your contribution statements can be directed to our financial secretary by calling the church office: 847-623-1197.

SIMPLY GIVING
Would you find it helpful to have your offerings taken from you bank account as you do other monthly drafts? At no cost to the congregation? Lutheran Brotherhood sponsors a program called Simply Giving which offers this service for people who wish to have offerings transferred electronically into their church's account. The Trinity United Church Council has approved this program for those who choose to participate in it. Contact the church office for more detail

Day of Pentecost: Red as the color of fire is used on this day when we remember the tongues of fire descended on the crowd in Jerusalem. In contrast to the color of scarlet, Pentecost’s red is a bright color.
The Holy Trinity: White is appointed, the expression of joy in the mystery of the Triune God.
Other Sundays after Pentecost: Green is used, to indicate our growth in faith as we follow the teachings and ministry of Christ.
